"Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal."
The quote has been attributed to Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky, Faulkner and even Steve Jobs, and oftentimes finds itself in the crossfires as advocating theft, but this isn't so.
“Great artists steal” is at its root about finding inspiration in the work of others, then using it as a starting point for original creative output. Artists may recontextualize, remix, substitute, or otherwise mashup existing work to create something new. Sometimes it’s as simple as calling something art.
Many of my postings on Instagram, for instance, had origins from which I borrowed and used as a stepping stone upon which my contribution was built. I would prefer to think of it as "inspiration" rather than "imitation".
This video is a amalgam of visual projects I have undertaken in my own free time using source material that I then build on, creating something different in the process. I was inspired by something, and, using it as a base like a painter might use a master's interpretation of perspective, I reinvent the work into a different form, serving a different purpose.
